Week one, part two. 2/9
2/9 - We have started to generate more ideas and we are thinking about completely switching our genre from horror to a coming of age or a psychological drama. We have ideas for both but we think that a coming of age is too easy and boring. Therefore, my partner and I need to do more research on what conventions and mise en scene a psychological drama contains and how we would do it.
2/10- After a numerous amount of research, I have persuaded my partner to do our film on a psychological drama. I am so excited because this is a challenge and I have so many ideas.
My first idea is that we integrate horror and a psychological drama together and use some of the same ideas from our first opening scene we ever did(the midterm)
My second idea is this storyline: There is a female character that is on her summer break. She has depression but still needs to work and show up to her lifeguarding job. The opening scene will portray her getting out of bed and ready for her day depressed. Then she would put clothes on and go for a run, so essentially following a normal morning routine. Then she would drive to work at her lifeguarding job at the beach, sad and depressed, but then once she gets off of work, he friends text her and ask if she wants to come over and hang out with them. She drives to her friend’s house and the ending would be her happy with her friends and her snapping back into reality when something dramatic and unordinary happens to snap her back onto reality. This may be too may things for just two minutes of an opening scene but I have other ideas of a storyline that are shorter. This is just an idea.
My third and final idea is somewhat like my second idea but just a little different. The storyline would go like this: There is a female character that is depressed. The opening would be her alarm going off and her getting ready for the day, and eating breakfast. While this is happening, the lighting will be dimmer and darker and the music will be sad, to portray the theme of depression. While she’s sitting at her kitchen counter, an alarm goes off reminding her to take her medication. Shortly after she takes it, she opens up a door and she is happy again. I’m not too sure how I want the end to go, but I think I want to stay with the idea of her happily driving to her friends house and being happy with her friends at the end.
Overall, my partner and I decided that we really want to focus on the theme of a societal issue whether its and eating disorder, anxiety, or depression. We are thinking of having a scene in whatever storyline we pick, where the character has food in front of her but does not eat it since any mental illness can negatively impact eating habits. Therefore, building off all the ideas, we want a character named “Savannah” and we want her to wake up in a depressed mood and then go from there with the story line.
