Character types: Propp’s Theory.

Returning to the TV Drama “Mamma Mia”. You can identify some of Propp’s character types.

Aligning some of Propp’s character types with the main characters in “Mamma Mia” these character functions can include Sophie, the main character as the seeker, as she embarks on a quest to discover the identify of her father and create a connection with him. Harry, Bill, or Sam as the villains/false hero's as their identities are initially a mystery and it is unclear for Sophie who her biological father is. Donna, Sophie’s mother as the donor character as she provides emotional support, guidance, and help to Sophie throughout her journey. Lastly both Sophie and Donna can also have the princess role because the outcomes of their weddings and the happiness they seeker is the reward and motivation for both characters throughout the film.

Evaluating the usefulness of Propp’s theory.

The theory’s applicability in this film includes departure from folktale structure even though Mamma Mia is not a traditional folktale, it is a contemporary musical that diverges from the narrative structures and characters found in traditional folktales. The characters also have multidimensional personalities with evolving motivations, relationships, and emotions which relates to Propp’s theory with characters. On another hand, the biggest idea that can separate Propp’s theory from the film and its characters is the fact that the theory overlooks cultural specifics which is extremely relevant in the film of Mamma Mia. The film is set in a Western, contemporary cultural context in the location of Greece and its history while including elements of current music and modern storytelling with scenes that include historical context to the characters and the location of the story.
